In everyday life, we interact in and with the physical world in many different ways, often without specifically paying attention to this interaction. Physical as well as auditory interaction can therefore take place in the periphery of our attention. Computing technology however, mainly represented by screens, is generally designed to be in the center of the attention. With the computer becoming more and more ubiquitous, the danger of information overload arises if the computer will stay in the center of the attention. Inspired by physical and auditory perception skills gained through interaction in the physical world, this PhD project explores how we can design intelligent systems that can be perceived and interacted with in the periphery of our attention, but also focused on in the center of our attention if desired.
