The mere fact that people treat computers and digital media as social actors ‘opens the door’ for technology to use the same social influence strategies humans do.

Social influence strategies or persuasive strategies are often used to increase compliance: If you walk into a bookstore you will find books recommended by experts or apparent bestsellers. Both of these messages could have been used on any of the books in the store to increase the likelihood of a purchase.

In this project we focus on these types of strategies and try to determine:

  1. How individuals differ in their compliance to messages supported by different strategies: Can we make persuasion profiles? and,
  2. How can we measure responses to strategies and create technology that adapts and uses the created persuasion profile?
