Master's program

The emergence of new technologies in itself is not sufficient to create new and successful products. In order to develop innovative concepts we need to understand how future products can help to serve, interest and excite people. We need a very special kind of designer that can bridge the gap between human needs and new technologies.

The TU/e Master in Industrial Design is this new type of designer. The Faculty of Industrial Design is creating a curriculum that integrates the key aspects of technology, user focus and creative design. Within projects, assignments and workshops, the ID Master will acquire practical experience and knowledge of the design of intelligent products, systems and services.

Learning activities

The Master programme consists of a design project, a design research project, modules (core and electives), classes and one final master project. Themes are used to help structure and forward these projects.

Structure

The ID Master degree course is a two year programme, divided in four blocks that each take one semester (30 credits). Each block takes 20 weeks (sometimes 21 weeks, depending on the year schedule), of which one week is start-up and 2 semester report and assessment. The other 17 weeks are allocated to different learning activities.

During the master, students can specialise as ‘designer’ or ‘design researcher’. Both perspectives can be distinguished in terms of the labour context for which this student qualifies, and the type of deliverable that can be expected from them in their final master’s project. The choice of this specialisation is made for the second master year.
